Gressoney-La-Trinité · Aosta Valley

A Walser house with a story that begins in 1680.

We found it by chance. We were walking along the path when we came across an extraordinary view: Monte Rosa on one side, Mont Nery on the other. And in the middle, the house. An old Stadel that had been abandoned for decades. We restored it with care, respecting its materials and atmosphere. Today it houses two independent accommodations. It sits in Edelboden Inferiore, between the Lys and Monte Rosa.

Casalpina

We didn’t want to make it new again.

The earliest traces of the house date to 1680. The ridge beam bears the date 1735, marking the reconstruction and extension that gave it its present form. When we bought it, it had been almost empty for around fifty years.

We salvaged the timber that was already there, used natural plasters and cocciopesto in the bathrooms. The heating is hidden beneath the floor, an invisible presence. In the Stadel, the stainless-steel kitchen stands against century-old larch walls. A meeting of history and the present. The bathroom, made by patient craftsmen, is finished in cocciopesto, a technique thousands of years old that still feels remarkable today.

One double bedroom, a living room with a double sofa bed, a large modern kitchen and a dining area. There is a small table on the balcony: in summer our guests have breakfast there; in the evening it is the right place for a drink while looking out over the wide valley and the imposing Mont Nery.

Mont Nery is more intimate: a double bedroom with one of the house’s original beds, a large bathroom, a small kitchenette that is perfect for breakfast and aperitivo, and a private entrance. Natural plaster, travertine and a large window looking out over the valley. It is designed for two people and for days spent outdoors. Direct access to the garden and the large larch table make it even easier to enjoy the atmosphere of Gressoney.

Outside the door

Gressoney is already there.

From the house you can walk along the Lys, head into the woods or reach the higher trails. Staffal and the Monterosa Ski lifts are only a few minutes away. In summer, skis give way to hiking boots, bikes and days that never seem to end.
